Novelty

Definition:
One of the three conditions that an invention must meet in order to be patentable. Novelty is present if every element of the claimed invention is not disclosed in a single piece of prior art.

Moral Rights

Definition:
Moral rights generally fall into categories: the right of an author to receive credit as the author of a work, to prevent others from falsely being named author, and to prevent use of the author's name in connection with works the author did not create.

Publisher Statement

Definition:
Text printed in each issue of a serial providing information such as the publication name, owner, staff, and frequency. This is generally found within the first few pages of text.

End User Piracy

Definition:
When a business or agency purchases a limited number of licenses to use software, and then makes unauthorized copies for use by others in the organization.

Confirmation Number

Definition:
Four-digit number that is assigned to each newly filed patent application. The confirmation number, in combination with the application number, is used to verify the accuracy of the application number placed on correspondence filed with the Office.

Copyright

Definition:
An exclusive right granted or conferred by the government on the creator of a work to exclude others from reproducing it, adapting it, distributing it to the public, performing it in public, or displaying it in public.

Question: Can I submit my manuscript on a computer disk?


Answer: No. Floppy disks and other removal media such as Zip disks, except for CD-ROMs are not acceptable. Therefore, the Copyright Office still generally requires a printed copy or audio recording of the work for deposit.
